An annual event showcasing the best calligraphy in every grade from all over Shiga Prefecture at the Otsu City Museum of History will take place on 13th -15th February 2015. These photos are from a previous year, but hopefully they give some idea of the scope and quality of this exhibition. After you finish looking at the calligraphy you should take the opportunity to see around the Museum of History, which has some interesting displays.

Five works side by side but each so different in character
There's some really cool stuff here!
The paper choice really sets off this calligraphy well
Do I detect a manga influence in some of these?
I really liked this circular design!
These are the work of young children
Gold stickers mean 'Best of Grade'
This has been painted on textured paper creating an unusual but pleasing effect
Just one of many bays in the huge hall filled with calligraphy
The white on black effect is achieved by painting the character with a kind of wax first
Hard to read but very beautiful, and deserving of its gold sticker!
It says 'casual'

Even I'm a Japanese, I can't read some of them. There are many way to use calligraphy techniques to express. I practiced a lot when I was a kid because I want to write neatly.
